Running as a hobby is more beneficial than what some people believe. I have been running for years now and I have never regretted the time I spent doing it. Most of the time, people start running to live a healthier life. I am one of them. However, I have found that there is more to running than just exercise. Regardless if you want to lose weight or gain it, going on a regular run improves your life in more ways than one.
Let us get one thing straight – I am not out here to preach. I will not make you change your mind. All I am doing is telling my personal story about why I fell in love with running. Why, after all this time, I am still very passionate about it.
Why should you run as a hobby?
Let me get all scientific on you for a second. Running has a lot of health benefits like improving your lung function and raising the level of god cholesterol in your body. It also improves blood circulation and gives your immune system a boost.
But that is as far as I will go. While there are several articles that will tell you why running as a hobby is good for you, I will deviate by giving you my personal reasons for running.
Running makes me feel energised.
I was not always a morning person. I am one of those that you will have to drag from the bed in the morning. This was why it was hard for me to run in the first place. I don’t like waking up early in the morning. However, when I felt how running in the morning made me feel energised the whole day – I stuck to it! I thought it will make me feel tired because I had to wake up early. It didn’t!
Running really did improve my immune system.
I used to get cough and colds easily. I swear when a person sneezes beside me, I will surely get the sniffles later that night. Well, that changed when I started running as a hobby. It probably had something to do with the way my lungs got an exercise as I ran or how I am exposed to outdoor elements on a regular basis. But I promise you I rarely get sick nowadays. Studies mention how running can also prevent some forms of cancer. I am not really sure about that but staying away from the sniffles is enough to convince me!
Running helps me make friends.
There are so many runners in London. When you run on a daily basis, you sometimes see familiar faces running with you. I have made a couple of friends over the years and have formed great relationships with them. I love how we support each other and give tips before races. It’s actually pretty cool if you think about it.
Running has become my “me” time.
When I run, I am usually alone in my thoughts. And I love that about running. When I have to make a major decision or I am about to work on something important, running helps me set my mind according to what has to be done. It is like when I start to run, my body goes on auto-mode and my mind is free to wander and explore possibilities without any distraction. When I listen to the right music, I am in my own zone. Of course, when I expect to do some heavy thinking while running, I stay away from the busy roads and stick to parks where I am safe. I suggest you do the same.
There you go! These are my personal reasons for running as a hobby. Obviously, there are other reasons to do this and I am sure you will discover them as you continue running on a regular basis.
